چکیده

investigations were initiated this year to develop field and laboratory viability assays for stored walnut pollen, indentify conditions suitable for in vitro pollen germination and pollen tube growth, and determine pollen tube growth rates in pistillate flowers. Results of this project will provide background information for future investigations of transmission of pollen-borne virus, factors influencing pistillate flower receptivity and ovule abortion, and to develop methods for assessing pollen viability and germination potential. Results described here are based on data collected in preliminary experiments conducted during 1981. This research will be continued over the next two years in conjunction with studies of pistillate flowers and pollen tube growth in vivo. Conclusions regarding the various aspects of walnut pollen biology under investigation will depend upon the results of this research.

Identification and implication of an allergenic PR-10 protein from walnut in birch pollen associated walnut allergy.

SCOPE English walnut (Juglans regia) belongs to the most important allergenic tree nuts. Co-sensitization with birch (Betula verrucosa) pollen has been reported. We aimed to identify a walnut allergen homologous to the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1. METHODS AND RESULTS A cDNA encoding a Bet v 1-homologous allergen (Jug r 5) in walnut kernels was cloned by RT-PCR. Jug r 5 was expressed i...

Xenia and Metaxenia in Persian Walnut (Juglans regia L.)

In 2007 and 2008, the influence of pollen source on the shell and kernel traits of resulting seeds and on fruit set was examined to evaluate the potential for Xenia or Metaxenia in Persian walnut. Pistillate flowers of ‘Jamal’, ‘Chandler’, ‘Hartley’ and ‘Pedro’ were crossed with the pollen of ‘Serr’, ‘Z60’ and ‘Damavand’. The pistillate flowers on each female parent were covered about one week...

Streptomycin Applications to Control Walnut Blight Disease Can Prevent Fertilization and Increase Fruit Drop

We investigated the basis for fruit drop in walnut (Juglans regia L.) following bloom period applications of streptomycin as a potential control treatment for walnut blight, a bacterial disease incited by Xanthomonas campestris pv. juglandis (Pierce) Dye. Experiments were conducted on streptomycin-treated field plots of ‘Vina’ walnut. Four streptomycin treatments were applied at different times...

دماوند، رقم جدید گردو به عنوان گرده‌دهنده برای ارقام و ژنوتیپ‌های گردوی ایرانی

Although self incompatibility in walnut has not been reported, but the dicogamy limits self pollination of walnut cultivars. As the density of female flowers produced by the tree is low, if a high fruit set occurs, yield especially in terminal bearing cultivars will not be high. So breeding of a pollinizer cultivar with proper pollen shading period is highly necessary for increasing fruit produ...

Nutritional Quality of the Walnut Male Inflorescences at Four Flowering Stages

Nutrients, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities of walnut male inflorescences at four flowering stages were analyzed in this study. The results showed that the male inflorescences were rich in carbohydrate, protein and mineral contents, and had antioxidant activities due to high contents of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The nutritional compositions were varied at four stages. In t...
